Levee day launched the year with several members wondering, with sorry heads, what was added to their coffee.
Bravo to those who braved the weather and turned out for our winter monthly meetings. Many of our other members are just starting to emerge from their annual hibernation or return from a break in Florida. The April meeting launched the Guest Speakers series with Earl Chapman speaking about the gossip and scandal in his booklet on the first 17 years of the Regimental History. This booklet is available for $8.50 at the Museum. He reported that he is currently researching three other time periods in the Regiment's history.
Bruce Ducat - Verrières Ridge - 2002 Easter week-end was a busy one for us as we said our sad farewells to Bruce Ducat, a veteran who exemplified dedication to his Regiment. Bruce was one of the original D-81/82 gang that signed up on September 5th, 1939.
The evening of Easter Monday had a contingent of 14 Association and Unit members, along with Honourary L/Col Victor Chartier, brave the knee-knocking cold to attend Montreal's 90th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge ceremonies at the Field of Honour. The sight of over 500 recruits bringing in lit candles to place on the gravestones was a remarkable and once in a lifetime experience. The Guests-of-Honour, Senator Romeo Dallaire (Ret'd. General) and L/Col David Hart (a Dieppe Veteran) both gave moving speeches to the assembled military and civilians in attendance. A stirring experience!
Sunday, April 15th had a mixed busload of veterans and members from the unit visit the Ottawa War Museum. Many thanks to our fellow members from the Upper Canada Association who came out in force to make us feel welcome.
Prior to leaving the Museum, we honoured all those who paid the supreme sacrifice. Forming up in Memorial Hall, which contains a single lone artifact, the headstone of the Unknown Soldier from the 1st World War, our duty piper, Pte. Ian Leblanc, played the Flowers of the Forest. The Act of Remembrance was read by Gary Young. Special thanks goes out to our tour guide, Robbie Robertson, who made our visit go so smoothly. (We hope he regains his voice!)

The Quebec government has now joined the other provinces in recognizing the past service and sacrifice that uniformed individuals have done over the years. Quebec veterans can now apply for a special licence plate with a red poppy in the center. To apply for this plate you can pick up the application form at the Association meeting, your Legion Branch or the Legion web-site at www.legion.ca. The cost is $5.00 administration fee for the plate and the application form gives a detailed listing of those entitled to this plate and how to apply for it. |
